SATO M84Pro Labels & Ribbons
IndustrialM84Pro Series
The SATO M84Pro is an industrial thermal transfer and direct thermal printer, one of 4 models in the M84Pro Series range. It prints up to 4.1" wide and takes media up to 5". Media loads as rolls up to 8.6" in diameter on cores of 3", and fanfold stacks are supported too. Ribbons run up to 1,475 ft, 4.4" wide, on a 1" core. They must be wound coated side in. Check the wind direction before ordering: this printer needs rolls wound face in.

SATO M84Pro — Frequently Asked Questions
Is the SATO M84Pro direct thermal or thermal transfer?
The SATO M84Pro does both. In thermal transfer mode it prints through a ribbon for durable, long-life labels; in direct thermal mode it prints straight onto heat-sensitive stock with no ribbon at all, which is how most shipping labels are produced.
What size ribbon does the SATO M84Pro use?
The SATO M84Pro takes thermal transfer ribbons up to 4.4" wide, up to 1,475 ft (450 m) long, on a 1" core, wound coated side in (CSI). Wax suits coated paper labels, wax-resin handles synthetics and heavier handling, and full resin is the choice for chemical, solvent and outdoor exposure.
What label sizes fit the SATO M84Pro?
The SATO M84Pro accepts media up to 5" wide, with a maximum print width of 4.1". Any narrower label will run as well, so long as the roll core and outside diameter also fit the media bay — width alone is not enough.
What roll core size does the SATO M84Pro take?
The SATO M84Pro takes rolls on 3" cores, with a maximum roll diameter of 8.6". A roll on a larger core will not seat on the spindle, and one over the diameter limit will not let the cover close.
Does roll wind direction matter on the SATO M84Pro?
Yes, and it is the constraint most often missed. The SATO M84Pro requires rolls wound face in (labels on the inside of the roll). Most stock rolls are wound face out, so a face-in printer needs media ordered specifically — the roll will physically load either way but will not print.
Can the SATO M84Pro use fanfold labels?
Yes. The SATO M84Pro accepts fan-folded stacks as well as rolls. A fanfold box holds far more labels than a roll of equivalent footprint, so it is the cheaper way to run high volume — the trade-off is bench space behind the printer.
Does the SATO M84Pro take 3-inch core rolls?
Yes — 3" cores are the industrial standard and the SATO M84Pro is built for them, which is what lets it hold the large-diameter rolls that keep reload stops down.
Why won't my label roll fit the SATO M84Pro?
Three things stop a roll loading in this printer: the roll is over 8.6" in diameter; the core is not 3"; the roll is wound face out instead of face in. Label width is usually the first thing people check and the least likely culprit — core size is the common one.
Where can I buy labels and ribbons for the SATO M84Pro in Canada?
Vantage Labels stocks blank thermal labels and printer ribbons that fit the SATO M84Pro, shipped from Canadian stock. Everything listed on this page has been checked against the printer's published media specifications — width, core, roll diameter and ribbon format — rather than matched on the printer's name.

What won’t fit the SATO M84Pro
We check every product against this printer’s published limits, so it’s worth knowing what we deliberately don’t recommend for it — these are the mistakes that cost a return.
Roll is wound out; this printer needs face-in media.
For example: 4" x 6" Direct Thermal (3000 Labels / Roll); 4″ x 3″ Direct Thermal (2000 Labels / Roll, 4 Rolls / Case); 4″ x 2″ Direct Thermal (3000 Labels / Roll, 4 Rolls / Case) and 19 more.
Wrong ribbon configuration (core size / ink side) for this printer.
For example: 4.33″ x 243ft Wax Ribbon (Eltron); 4.02″ x 1181ft Wax-Resin Ribbon (Datamax); 4.17″ x 1969ft Wax-Resin Ribbon (Tec) and 16 more.
